The Outer Ring Road is a road-cum-area development project, since its aim is the development of well-planned and well-connected urban settlements around the Hyderabad Metropolitan area.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh formed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the development of the Outer Ring Road, called the “Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited” (HGCL), under the Companies Act 1956 on 26th December 2005, with equity participation from INCAP(40%) and HUDA(60%). Currently, INCAP holds 26% and HMDA holds 74% of equity in HGCL.

The ORR is developed as an expressway of 8 lanes divided with access control, and has a total of 19 access points. The ORR has a length of 158 km connecting several areas such as Narsing – Kokapet – Patancheru – Medchal – Shamirpet – Ghatkesar – Pedda Amberpet – Shamshabad – TSPA – Narsing -Nankramguda -Gachibowli. Further, along the ORR, service roads are developed with 2 lanes undivided section, on both sides of ORR.

Objectives of ORR are:
  • To provide quick access to important nodes in the city & to connect various urban nodes outside the city by connecting the NH and SH network and other important city roads.
  • To act as a bypass for the through traffic on the national highways and state highways and in turn reduce the accidents by avoiding movement of commercial traffic in the city.
  • To reduce congestion in the metropolitan area and inner ring road.
  • To reduce overall pollution in the city and to promote environmental up-gradation.
The ORR is an Access Controlled Expressway with the following salient features:
Total length 158 Km
Design speed 120 Kmph
Right of Way (ROW) 150 m
Main Carriage Way 8 lanes
Hard shoulder for emergency Parking/breakdown vehicles 3 m wide.
Width of Central Median 5 m
Service Roads on either side 2 lanes
Interchanges 19 Nos.
The Service Road of ORR act as:
  • An Emergency lane
  • Provide space to the breakdown vehicles
  • Provide access from the radial roads to the nearest interchanges and interchanges and vice versa.

An interchange is a grade separated (is the process of aligning a junction of two or more transport axes at different heights) connection between a limited access facility and another road. The primary objective of an interchange is to maintain mainline traffic flow while allowing access to and from the limited access facility. Entry and exit ramps allow traffic to enter or exit a freeway. Every interchange on ORR is provided with toll plazas.
